The short answer
OpenAI now bundles a monthly allowance of API credits into its top paid ChatGPT plans. The grant funds one linked API organization, so it's a way to build and test applications or agents against the OpenAI API without adding a separate prepaid balance first[1]. It does not increase your ChatGPT usage allowance or your signed-in Codex allowance[1].
Who's eligible
The benefit covers Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 tiers, plus eligible Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats[1]. It does not apply to ChatGPT Plus, Go, Free, or free trials, and Enterprise, Edu, and legacy Codex seats are not eligible[1]. Your eligible subscription must also have been active for at least 7 days before you claim[1].
How much you get
| Plan or seat | Monthly API allowance |
|---|---|
| Pro ($100 tier) | $100 per billing period |
| Pro ($200 tier) | $200 per billing period |
| Pro ($500 tier) | $500 per billing period |
| Business Standard seat | $20 per seat, pooled |
| Business Premium seat | $100 per seat, pooled |
| Business workspace cap | $500 per billing period |
Business credits are pooled across the workspace, capped at $500 per monthly cycle or $6,000 per annual cycle for workspaces billed annually upfront[1]. The first grant is prorated for the time remaining in the paid billing period, so what you see at claim time may be less than the full-period allowance[1].
What the credits cover
The free credits cover paid API Platform usage billed to the linked organization, including Responses and Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images, and built-in tools with their applicable usage and storage charges[1]. They do not cover Codex usage through API keys[1].
How to claim
You can claim either from ChatGPT (Settings → Billing for Pro, or the workspace billing settings for Business) or from the API Platform billing page. Both paths link your eligible subscription to a single API organization, which receives the credits[1]. Use the same email address for both accounts, and note that linking an API organization and receiving a grant are two separate steps[1].
Limits and expiry
After activation, credits are granted automatically when your subscription renews, so you don't need to re-claim each cycle. Monthly grants expire at the end of the billing cycle and unused credits do not roll over. The benefit can also change or be removed in the future[1].
Should you care?
Verdict: If you're already paying for ChatGPT Pro or Business and want to experiment with the OpenAI API — building a custom app or agent — this is essentially free runway to start. It's less useful if you only use ChatGPT's consumer interface or Codex, since the credits don't apply there[1].
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT Plus eligible?
No. The benefit is limited to Pro and eligible Business plans; Plus, Go, Free, and free trials do not qualify[1].
Do unused credits roll over?
No. Monthly grants expire at the end of the billing cycle and do not carry forward[1].
Do these credits work in Codex?
No. They fund the API platform — including Agents and GPT-Live — but do not cover Codex usage through API keys[1].
